Dr Tony Robertson, PhD

Early Career Collaborator

Dr Tony Robertson is a Senior Research Fellow in Health Inequalities at the University of Glasgow, funded through an internal scheme ('MVLS Futures Fellows'). He is based in General Practice and Primary Care in the School of Health and Wellbeing. Tony originally studied Behavioural Ecology at undergraduate level at St. Andrews University and then at PhD level at the University of Glasgow focusing on maternal effects and stress signalling, before he changed focus to human health and social epidemiology in 2010. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Glasgow and Edinburgh, before taking up a lectureship in Public Health at the University of Stirling. He moved back to Glasgow in August 2025.

His work focuses on three areas around health inequalities:

1) Identifying the socioeconomic patterning of biomarkers of physiological wear-and-tear and disease risk (e.g. allostatic load, biological ageing, proteomics) and how we incorporate this biological insight into social/complex intervention development.

2) Examining the health impacts of exposure to healthy and unhealthy places, such as blue space and advertising.

3) Building solidarity and working with grassroots and community groups and social movements to identify, evidence and campaign around policies to tackle health inequalities (e.g. supporting communities to collect, analyse and use their own data/evidence of local health determinants/risks and subsequent health inequalities).
